In this essay Elbow sets to show the difference between being a writer and being an academic. One of the biggest things that he mentions is the materials that are read. Elbow says that all other parts of the academic world have turned to reading and he does not want writing to be one of those subjects. Elbow makes sure to say that he does not believe that writers should go without reading at all, he just wants it to be different and done differently. For example he has his students read each others writings, rather than published journal essays, as is done in most classes. The next topic that he discusses is how the readings are taken. Elbow states that while reading the academic takes whatever they read as they want it rather than even giving a thought toward what the author was trying to say.
